Full Job Description:

The Transportation and Maintenance Director position at Hi-Plains School District is a leadership position that is responsible for all of the district’s transportation and facility needs. The Transportation and Maintenance Director is responsible for the supervision of the Transportation, Maintenance, and Custodial staff and works closely with the Superintendent to ensure that our students are transported safely, that the school building and grounds are impeccably maintained, and that the district Facility Master Plan is implemented, monitored, and revised as needed. This position also works closely with the Superintendent in developing the Transportation and Maintenance department annual budgets, accounts for materials, equipment, and supplies, and performs related work as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Assigns work, schedules employee work shifts, approves sick leave and vacation days for employees they supervise, arranges bus route and event coverage when necessary, reviews and approves timesheets
  • Maintenance and Repair of all District Vehicles
  • Maintenance and Repair of all District Equipment
  • Trains and/or Oversees Employees in Work Procedures, Standards and Safety Practices, and Monitors Operations for Compliance with Safety Regulations and District Guidelines and/or Policy
  • Annual Bus and Vehicle Inspections (if the person is certified by the State)
  • Interviews and Recommends Job Applicants for Open Maintenance and Transportation Positions
  • Supervision and Evaluation of Bus Drivers
  • Develop Bus Routes and Emergency Routes (mud routes), as Needed
  • Confer with Superintendent in Decisions Regarding Inclement Weather, School Closure and/or Delays
  • Work with the Athletic Director to Arrange Transportation to Athletic Events
  • Prepares Documentation and Recommends Discipline and/or Improvement Plans for Deficiencies
  • Schedule Athletic and/or Activity Drivers
  • Supervision and Evaluation of Custodial Staff
  • Maintenance and Repair of all District Facilities, Properties, and Grounds
  • Arrange for Necessary Repair Work by Outside Vendors, When Needed
  • HVAC Maintenance and Repair
  • Working with the Business and Finance Department when Ordering any and all Transportation and Maintenance Materials
  • Take Delivery of all Large Shipments
  • Prepare Reports as Needed
  • Fire Suppression Maintenance and Testing
  • Groundskeeping - Mowing, Sprinkler System Maintenance, Timely Snow Removal
  • Coordinate Use of School Facilities with Staff and Community Groups
  • Work with the Superintendent on the Development and Implementation of the district’s Facilities Master Plan
  • Perform Other Related Duties as Assigned

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Equivalent to graduation from high school
  • Minimum of three years driving experience
  • Previous work experience in a school district transportation department preferred
  • Previous work experience in a school district maintenance department preferred
  • Demonstrated experience, skills, and knowledge in large and small school maintenance projects preferred
  • Demonstrated experience, skills, and knowledge in school bus safety
  • Hold a current Commercial Driver License or the ability to obtain one
  • Demonstrated ability and skill in working with a variety of people in complex situations
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner with administrators and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to serve in a leadership role
  • Understanding of employee relations
  • Possess current knowledge and training in the areas of school transportation and school facilities maintenance
  • Commitment to the education of students as the primary responsibility of the district
  • Integrity and reliability in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with district personnel and members of the public
