UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1. The person in this role will be a member of a team that participates in the conduct of multiple research studies involving human subjects and their samples, with a focus on human immune responses in various disease states. The purpose of this position is to advance research in human disease. This is achieved by conducting assays and experiments of prepared samples. There is special focus on the development of flow cytometric assays and determining the utility of these assays in the clinical setting.
Under direct supervision of the Clinical Immunology Lab Manager, the individual in this role will;
- Assist and support in developing and Conducting flow cytometric assays and experiments using whole blood and PBMC; analyze flow cytometry data using FlowJo software.
- Process human blood, fluid and tissues, including using sterile technique for isolating human PBMC; thaw and cryopreserve cells.
- Conduct other research assays that include cytokine ELISA, cell stimulation, magnetic bead separations.
- Collate and analyze data, using software programs such as excel or prism, and generate graphical representations of data; participate in generation of reports and manuscripts.
- Interact orally and in writing with clinical investigators with a service mentality; answer questions regarding RTS studies; participate in pricing, study set up, and result dissemination, collection and return of specimens.
- Make reagents, maintain equipment and inventories of supplies and samples, and order supplies as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in immunology or related field, and up to 1 year of relevant laboratory research experience.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to perform meticulous manual tasks and to use good sterile technique.
- Highly organized and have a knowledge of laboratory working environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within an established team environment and with external clients both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent computer, organizational, and record keeping skills.
Desirables:
- Experience in preparation of PBMC, tissue culture, and flow cytometry.
- Knowledge of clinical laboratory testing and/or immunology.
- Knowledge of UW procedures (ordering, etc).
