Director of Mail Services
Job Description
The Director of Mail Services serves as a key strategic and operational leader responsible for the development, implementation, and assessment of the university’s mail services programs. The Director establishes and executes strategies to advance a comprehensive mail and package delivery program for residential students. Additionally, the Director manages a mail program for university departments on the Blacksburg campus, as well as Virginia Tech’s campuses in Roanoke and the Greater Washington DC area.
The Director manages a staff focused on centralized mail, departmental mail, residential mail, and residential package delivery and will also oversee the central distribution warehouse center. In strategically leading the team, the Director will create and enhance a culture and processes that support efficiencies, effectiveness, continuous improvement, and customer service. The Director will also promote employee engagement and high-performance work teams.
Beginning in the fall 2020, the university will implement an intelligent locker program for all residential students on the Blacksburg campus. All packages shipped through USPS and other vendors (i.e., UPS) will be delivered to a central distribution center. The university will manage delivery of the packages to intelligent locker banks located in four locations across the residential campus. The Director will be instrumental in fully implementing and managing this inaugural program and will have significant levels of responsibility and accountability for the program.
To successfully carry out these functions, the Director of Mail Services must have excellent human resource management skills to lead a cross-functional team focused on superior excellent service to the university community. The Director must also have experience managing resources, including financial, physical, and technological in the successful execution of university and departmental priorities. The director should have excellent knowledge of the inner workings of the United States Postal Service and is responsible for ensuring full regulatory and legal compliance requirements. The Director implements changes in procedures to improve the overall efficiency of the university postal operations.
Required Qualifications
A master’s degree in business or administration, or a combination of education and experience equivalent to an advanced degree.
Significant experience managing operational teams with preference given for mail or warehouse management experience. Strong strategic and customer focus with a clear understanding of the wider issues impacting the markets.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and communicate with others at all levels.
Ability to develop excellent working relationships across the institution and to use these relationships to deliver service improvements.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Able to adapt and succeed in an evolving technology environment.
Evidence of well-developed leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
USPS Executive Mail Center Manager Certification.
USPS Mail Design Professional Certification.
Mail Systems Management Association Certifications:
• Certified Mail & Distribution Systems Manager
• Certified Mail & Distribution Systems Supplier
• Mail piece Design Consultant
