Description
The Buildings & Grounds - Grounds Supervisor is responsible for performing and supporting technicians who perform a variety of routine semi-skilled and skilled work related to Grounds maintenance, installation and equipment operation.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a Technical and/or Administrative Superior.
Supervision Exercised: Provides direct management support to technicians working in the Buildings & Grounds - Grounds Division. Supervisors are responsible to the Superintendent and support & oversee the activities of up to eight technicians. Technicians may be performing tasks in locations dispersed throughout the county.

• Insure that oral and written directives, policy, and ordinances of Weld County are consistently and uniformly applied and reflect actual practice and current operating needs.
• Ability to work effectively in groups of peers and employees.
• Train and appraise performance of technicians; recognize appropriate and exceptional performance; work with subordinate to help correct deficiencies. Take appropriate steps, as necessary, to correct and document substandard or inappropriate subordinate performance.
• Schedule technicians, plan leaves, and insure adequate human resources are available for a given task; facilitate effective time management by subordinate personnel and efficient use of overtime; document and/or log all data related to the completion of work orders in a timely manner; exercise sound, independent judgment in decision making.
• Facilitate effective communication; investigate complaints on assigned subordinates; evaluate working conditions for safety improvements; investigate and report subordinate on-the-job injuries and damage of county property as necessary.
• Conduct informal administrative investigations; motivate subordinates to be safe and vigilant in their duties; prepare written reports, logs, and other documentation as required by assignment.
• Maintain constructive working relationships with peers, subordinates, superiors, administrative staff in the Buildings & Grounds Department and other county departments.
• Perform on-going training needs assessment; assist in development of minimum job competencies, and development of an annual training plan.
• Perform job assignments as directed by the Superintendent and/or the Director.
• Perform tasks including but not limited to the following: Assemble irrigation pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and welding equipment
• Ability to read and understand building plans and inspect structures and turf areas to assess material and equipment needs, to establish the sequence of installations, and to plan installation around obstructions such as buried utilities and vegetation.
• Ability to review blueprints and building codes and specifications to determine work details and procedures.
• Perform routine maintenance of facility grounds by safely operating all power and/or hand equipment required to keep the facility's lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers in a clean, safe, and attractive condition, to include weed control, fertilize, removal of debris and dead foliage.
• Perform sprinkler system replacement of valves, wiring, clocks & heads; to include digging, trenching and clock programming. Understand well operation and perform well maintenance; to include pressure gauges, valves, filters and pond fountains.
• Perform maintenance on lawns, trees, shrubs and building interiors and exteriors, including painting and minor cosmetic repairs to walls, ceilings and floors.
• Perform overall maintenance support for all county buildings.
• Document and/or log all data related to the completion of work orders in a timely manner.
• Perform the application of pesticides & herbicides under supervision.
• Perform minor concrete repairs, flag pole maintenance & repairs, construct and repair fences & gates, distribute license plates, etc.
• Inspect and maintain grounds and sidewalks, breezeways, parking lots, and facility entrances in a safe, clean, and attractive condition free of hazards. Routinely empty trash receptacles, and picks up litter throughout the exterior areas of the facilities.
• Operate machinery and tools to include; boom lift, fork lift, front end loader, tractor, bobcat, trencher, mowers, trimmers' snow blowers, shovels, picks, brooms, etc.
• Erect and work off of scaffolding and ladders.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and effectively communicate current and anticipated problems to supervisor.
• May be required to be on-call status during hours other than normal shift hours and perform related work as required.
• Participate in snow removal activities including operating snow plows, snow blowers, and shovels.
• Ability to select and proficiently use a variety of hand & power tools and equipment to complete a given assignment, to include: Tape measure, Multi tip screwdriver, Vise Grip pliers, Side cutters, Tubing cutter, Cold/wood chisels, 2 ft. Level, Claw hammer, Hack saw, Various adjustable wrenches, Ball-peen hammer, Regular & stubby screwdrivers, Needle nose pliers, Allen keys imperial/metric, Socket set, Files, Crow bar, Pipe wrench, Shovels, Tin snips, etc.
• May be required to be on-call status during hours other than normal shift hours and perform related work as required.
• Ability to safely operate a vehicle in routine conditions.
